What to Expect?

Architecture school offers students a life-changing experience that is both exciting and challenging. The curriculum is focused on design studios where work is based on projects that require drawing, model-making, experimenting, and creative problem-solving. After going through high school, where classes heavily rely on memorizing information and written exams, studios offer a totally different environment and set of expectations: students have to be self-motivated, open to discussion and critique, willing to take risks, ready to engage in teamwork, and mature enough to tackle problems that don’t have a single, easy solution.

In design studios, students are given the freedom to explore their interests, which can be exhilarating but also scary for those used to a strictly structured learning environment. With repeated experiences in design studios, students will gain the confidence to take decisions and defend them, learn about their personal strengths and weaknesses, and thrive in situations that require critical thinking and innovative solutions.

Architecture school is also unique in the diversity and interdisciplinarity of its courses. Students will take courses on the history of ancient civilizations and others focused on the most cutting-edge technology, courses focused on abstract ideas and philosophies and others focused on physical materials and tools, courses aligned with science and engineering and others aligned with art and literature, courses that encourage free imagination and others that delve into the complexity of real-world problems. While this breadth of courses is a challenge for all students to master, it is also a unique opportunity for them to discover new interests and talents.

Architecture students spend long and difficult hours in order to complete the tasks required of them in their studios and courses, but those hours are highly rewarding. When those students graduate, they will see the world differently, they will understand the design logic of surrounding objects and places, and they will be able to positively contribute to the design of the world around them.
