Bachelor of Visual Communication Design Program

We critically review and explore the conceptual practice “knowledge of how to do things” from a communication design grammar perspective. In a field dominated by objectivity, students translate invisible concepts into tangible forms “full of meaning” through research-driven design projects for intentional targeted audiences.
After graduating from this program, students would be able to:

Create a new understanding and scientific knowledge in design education and professional practice.
Realize that form and function are connected to and with universal human needs.
Realize that values of logic and intuition intermingle in the processes towards quality and creativity.
Be fully involved and committed to their-own learning.
Become effective design thinkers and most importantly, creative problem solvers in the disciplines of communication.

Program Vision

The Visual Communication Design program aspires to produce adaptable creative design thinkers who conceptualize contextually and find innovative and effective solutions to human communication needs.

Program Mission

Contemporary visual communication is a dynamic, interactive problem-solving process. The undergraduate program in Visual Communications Design helps students create emotional and intellectual dialogues as processes of communication between the visual languages of design production.

The objective of this program is to increase students’ knowledge and ability; sharpening students’ logical reasoning and perception to further mature their objectivity in thinking. The program aims to aid students’ understanding of theories of culture, building their concepts and developing skills in procedures to empower them with strategic knowledge, techniques, materials, and mind tools.

Life after graduation

Visual Communication designers produce through industrial resources and, she/he will find career opportunities in both the government and the private sectors in Kuwait. Kuwait Ministries hire Visual Communication designers for jobs involving designs for information, education, persuasion, administration, design production, and design consultancy. Jobs in the private sector are offered through in-house designs for businesses, organizations, agencies, hospitals, banks, and, service productions. Just as important, Visual Communication designers can also be entrepreneurs and freelancers.

Learning Outcomes

Our B.S. curriculum is designed on a four-year plan. This plan provides intellectual theory studio-based practice design, fundamental courses that are structured to enrich each student’s cognitive development as she or he progresses through the Visual Communication design program. Going from a communication design perspective as well as into scientific research in other disciplines to real-world work experiences, our design education focuses on learning by conducting that transforms VC&ID students into professional design thinkers.

The VCD Program in a Nutshell

Freshmen Year

Fundamentals of studio: design students learn representation and expression principles and elements using a variety of methods, tools, materials, and techniques.
Fundamentals of design thinking: design students learn the foundations of design thinking process; theory and practice; ‘Gestalt Theory’, form/symbol development 2d, 3d, motion, typography, color theory.
Fundamentals in technology: design students learn introduction of computer technology, word progress, layout and introductory digital editing.
Fundamentals of design research methods: design students learn planning, visual thinking, producing, and analysis.
Design history: design students critically review and study the human factor, and the history of visual communication design
Critique and evaluation: design students learn critical backgrounds and principles.

Sophomore Year

Advanced studio/exploring tools and materials and developing new interpretations and perspectives.
Intermediate level in visual communication design thinking: design students visually represent and convey a conceptual idea into a visual artifact using metaphors and analogies.
Intermediate level in technology: design students function as intellectual partners with technology.
Intermediate in visual communication design methodology: design students develop concept mapping and hypothesize about the design problem and follow a reasoning process.
Design history: design students critically review contemporary issues of visual communication design.
Critique and evaluation/reflecting on design thinking and doing.

Junior Year

Professional Practice: design students prepare for the transition from student to working professional.
Advanced visual communication design thinking: design students design their visual communication design problem and produce unexpected outcomes.
Advanced technology: design students learn more on technology and machines for implementation.
Advances in visual communication design methodology/design students learn and apply scientific research in visual communication design.
Design history: design students learn comparative research in design histories.
Critique and evaluation: design students learn how to think about what they know and how they came to know by engaging other students in critical evaluation, creative and complex thinking skills resulting from getting students to reflect and examine both the design processes and products and what they have learned.

Senior Year

Internship: design students continue professional practical experience and gain valuable skills in the real-world and successful completion of visual communication design project for actual studio clients.
Senior visual communication design project: design students develop and complete a semester-long capstone project.
